The differences between block paving and pattern imprinted concrete

Many of our customers are confused by the REAL differences between block paving and pattern imprinted concrete. We’d like to help you understand them with here.

By James Harty

As two of the most popular options for driveways and patios, it can be hard to know which is the best option for your home. Both block paving and pattern imprinted concrete, otherwise known as Creteprint, offer a more interesting option than plain tarmac or concrete, but what are the differences between them? In this blog, we take a closer look at the two options, so that you can choose the best surface for your home.

Durability

Well laid block paving is extremely durable, and it will last slightly longer than a pattern imprinted concrete surface. However, if blocks are not laid well or if particularly heavy blocks are used, they can loosen and start to spread, which is not an issue with concrete.

Price

Pattern imprinted concrete is much quicker to lay, so for those with a very large surface to cover it is likely to work out cheaper than block paving. However, it is worth noting that if an area becomes damaged and needs to be repaired, it will be cheaper and quicker to remove and replace individual blocks rather than whole sections of pattern imprinted concrete.

Maintenance

Both block paving and imprinted concrete will require regular washing to retain their appearance, however concrete will also need resealing every 3-4 years. If you are looking for minimal maintenance, block paving is ideal, although you will need to keep on top of weeds between the small gaps.

Drainage

Block paving is naturally porous and able to drain easily, whereas pattern imprinted concrete in not permeable. This means that drainage will need to be incorporated into the area, and it will need to comply with the required patio and garden drainage regulations.
