Block Paving

Block paving is often the perfect solution for driveways, patio’s, pavements, walkways and road surfaces. There are very good reasons for that with most people reporting that it increased the curb-appeal of and the value of their home. It is also a cost-effective solution as it is widely regarded as the go-to option with many contractors specialising in block paving installation.

Block paving can last for more than 10 years if it is regularly maintained. This includes jet-washing every 12 months and re-sanding when required. You could also spray your paving blocks to change the colour and replace any damaged blocks individually without the need to dig up the whole area.

There is no reason why jet washing can damage your block paving. An annual jet washing will bring your block paving back to life and help retain the aesthetic appeal.

If you notice areas of your block paving ‘sink’ it is in almost all cases due to poor installation. The base has most likely not been laid correctly or done so with the wrong materials. If the base is not sufficient to support the weight, then you will likely encounter problems with your block paving ‘sinking’ in areas where vehicles are regularly parked.

When considering a block paving driveway, the first thing to note is how much weight it will need to support. 60mm block paving will hold up to 10 tons of parked vehicle weight. 50mm block paving should not be considered for modern driveways as it is only suitable for light pedestrian traffic.

No you will not require planning permission to lay block paving if a permeable or porous surface allowing water to drain through is used, or if the water is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally.

Sealing your block paving and any natural stone surfaces is best practice and stongly recommended. The correct sealer creates a protective shield that prevents water, oil and dirt from damaging the integrity of your block paving and affecting the aesthetics. It will also prevent weed growth and insect infestation.

Whether you are planning on selling your home, renting it out or just doing some home improvements, investing in a new or replacement driveway will repay itself in added value to your home and increased curb-appeal. An unkept and damaged driveway will devalue your homes appeal and potentially deter people from buying or renting your house. The other thing to consider is that a new driveway will require less maintenance.

Having good quality block paving installed by a professional and experienced paving contractor is believed to add between 5-10% value to the average home. However if you are creating a ‘designer driveway’ with a patterned effect and different coloured paving blocks and your home is in a sought after area then you can see your homes value increased by upto 20%
